Six more Metro teachers have earned National Board Certification, one of the highest and most difficult honors a teacher can earn. These additions mean the district has 111 Nationally Board Certified Teachers in classrooms and leadership roles across the district.
These teachers earned the title back in December and were honored at the Board of Education meeting tonight. The six new NBC Teachers in Metro Schools are:
- Teresa Agee, math teacher at McGavock High School
- Rachel Goode, art teacher at Hunters Lane High School
- Jill Peeples, community outreach coordinator in Central Office
- Meredith Sohrabi, third grade teacher at Mt. View Elementary School
- Marla Streit, librarian at Granbery Elementary School
- Jane Weaver, French teacher at MLK Jr. Magnet School
National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential given only to educators who complete a rigorous application and review process. “Board certification plays an important role in … setting the standard for advanced practice in teaching,” writes the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). “Research has shown that the students of NBCTs learn more than their peers in other classrooms.”
NBPTS established this process to better shape the teaching profession. The goal is to define standards for certifying excellent teachers, much in the same way standards are defined for professions like architecture, law and medicine. Carrying this certification, teachers can lend their voices to the national conversation on effective teaching practices and instruction.
Congratulations to these exceptional educators! Thank you for serving Metro students and families every day!
